History
GreenPLUS evolved from an effort to meet the increasing demands of homeowners for information on how to improve their environmental impact. Hiring an environmental consultant or an architect is not an affordable luxury for most who want to remodel. theGreenTeam Inc. developed the GreenPLUS Registry – a free, web-based tool for homeowners – to respond to this need.
There are 75,227,000 existing owner-occupied homes in the US (Census Bureau 2006). Decisions about their operation, maintenance, and redesign are made by DIY homeowners and not building industry professionals. GreenPLUS is the first green building rating program intended for those homes and their owners. The GreenPLUS Registry is designed to rate and educate users on how they can improve their Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) of their home. This benefits a homeowner by saving money on utility bills, property taxes, insurance premiums, and health costs, along with responding better to disasters and increasing sustainability.
The GreenPLUS rating system certificate provides documentation of the HSW impact for qualifying homes. Additionally, homeowners and realtors can use the certificates to market homes and persuade homebuyers to give more weight to HSW aspects in their buying decisions.
Not only does GreenPLUS provide much needed information but it allows a forum where registered homeowners can discuss and comment on their experiences with green products and services. This site is unique in the fact that it is not owned or operated for the purpose of sales but to provide information and support sustainable development.
theGreenTeam Inc. has committed 20% of their resources to volunteer efforts in support of sustainability. This includes their development, support and maintenance of the GreenPLUS Registry.
