Overview

GreenPLUS helps you rate your home’s potential Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) related to environmental stewardship and disaster-preparedness. This rating service is available at no cost to you.

If you qualify, GreenPLUS will issue you a certificate indicating the HSW rating that your home has achieved, and will record your home’s rating in the National GreenPLUS Registry. If you don’t qualify, GreenPLUS provides sources of additional information to help you understand the issues and opportunities for improvement.

GreenPLUS has real value because it can help save you money. Costs for the homeowner related to environmental issues & disaster preparedness are always escalating. These costs include:

energy bills
water bills
property taxes
insurance premiums
health costs
disasters

Local building regulations establish minimum requirements to protect the health, safety, and welfare (HSW) of the public. However, the National GreenPLUS Registry goes beyond these minimum requirements. The National GreenPLUS Registry examines health, safety, and welfare using a precautionary approach. The National GreenPLUS Registry assesses the HSW of the house not only during normal daily use, but ALSO in a disaster. For example, some materials allowed by building codes may give off toxic fumes even though they do not burn or generate smoke. This off-gassing can seriously affect occupants, emergency personnel, and the public.

GreenPLUS evaluates:

• Health:

This refers to the health of the occupants of the home. The Health Rating considers potential indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and indoor air quality (IAQ) impacts of products used in the home.

• Safety:

This refers to the disaster preparedness of the home & its occupants. The Safety Rating considers the potential of the house to withstand a disaster event; and, to function without municipal services after an event. It also reviews the potential of the house to contribute to a disaster event (for example, potential contribution to flooding due to stormwater runoff from your property).

• Welfare:

This refers to the environmental impacts of the home, which indirectly impacts both Health and Safety. The Welfare Rating considers the demands of the house on the earth’s limited resources (for example, energy efficiency, water efficiency, and materials efficiency). It also reviews the possible impacts on the quality of the earth’s resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
